چکیده

A prominent challenge in the support of Wide Area Applications (WAA) involves their unpredictable behavior over a dynamic WAN that results in a considerable variability in access latency (end-toend delay). Latency profiles capture the changing latencies that clients experience when accessing a server and can be utilized as a WAA monitoring and optimization tool. However, in the presence of hundreds of servers and tens of thousands of clients, managing millions of latency profiles cannot scale. In this paper we propose a method for scalable monitoring and performance prediction of WAA using aggregate latency profiles. We utilize Relevance Networks to computes and analyzes comprehensive pair-wise mutual information and correlation for the latency profiles, as well as to build and maintain aggregate latency profiles. We have conducted experiments demonstrating that there is a considerable amount of non-random associations between individual latency profiles. We empirically show that aggregating them improves the overall prediction power of distributed performance monitoring for WAAs.

Wide Area Performance Monitoring Using Aggregate Latency Profiles

A challenge in supporting Wide Area Applications (WAA) is that of scalable performance management. Individual Latency Profiles (iLPs) were proposed in the literature to capture latency distributions experienced by clients when connecting to a server; it is a passive measurement made by client applications and is gathered on a continuous basis. In this paper, we propose a scalable technique for ...

Latency Profiles: Performance Monitoring for Wide Area Applications

Recent technological advances have enabled the deployment of wide area applications against Internet accessible sources. A performance challenge to applications in such a setting is the unpredictable end-to-end latency of accessing these sources. We use passive information gathering mechanisms to learn end-to-end latency distributions and construct Latency Profiles (LPs). We hypothesize that a ...

Low-latency Estimates for Window-aggregate Queries over Data Streams

Obtaining low-latency results from window-aggregate queries can be critical to certain data-stream processing applications. Due to a DSMS’s lack of control over incoming data (typically, because of delays and bursts in data arrival), timely results for a window-aggregate query over a data stream cannot be obtained with guarantees about the results’ accuracy. In this thesis, I propose a techniqu...

Latency Compensation in Multi Chaotic Systems Using the Extended OGY Control Method

The problem discussed in this paper is the effect of latency time on the OGY chaos control methodology in multi chaotic systems. The Smith predictor, rhythmic and memory strategies are embedded in the OGY chaos control method to encounter loop latency. A comparison study is provided and the advantages of the Smith predictor approach are clearly evident from the closed loop responses. The comple...

Potential and Limits of Web Prefetching Between Low-Bandwidth Clients and Proxies

The majority of the Internet population access the World Wide Web via dial-up modem connections. Studies have shown that limited modem bandwidth is the main contributing factor to the Web access la-tency perceived by the users. In this paper, we investigate one approach to reduce the user-perceived latency: pre-pushing from the proxy to the browsers. The approach takes advantage of the idle tim...
